Our performance-based instruction makes learning fun while students master new skills. Private Sessions are customized to each students’ level and learning style. Performance opportunities are encouraged and set up by Dave Ivaz Music so students experience the thrill of live performance in a nurturing environment.
Students begin by learning the basics: chords, strumming, simple scales, time and key signatures, basic ear training and how to tune their instrument.
As students progress they learn the fretboard patterns of the pros, and exercises that building correct hand and finger techniques for strength, speed and flexibility. More complex music theory, including improvisation and building solos, fingerpicking and playing comfortably anywhere on the instrument neck are some of the skills students can progress to within weeks.

Dixieland Banjo
Dave’s Dixieland Jazz Band, the Ragtime Ramblers, was considered one of the finest ensembles in the US Midwest. With the Ragtime Ramblers and leading his “Dave’s Speakeasy 1920’s Revue” Dave has performed with notable musicians in this genre, and is a master of the repertoire. Dixieland students learn the songs and their history as well as the plectrum banjo. Highly recommended for guitarists who wish to expand their instrumental options.
Jazz and Rock “Improv Made Easy”
Take your playing to the next level in a fun setting where creativity is king! Dave has taught his signature improvisation method to students at every level, including
post-secondary music students. Dave studied with legendary jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and Dave’s skill as an improviser made him the guitarist of choice for noted entertainers including legendary jazz vocalist Nancy Wilson. His simple, straightforward methods take the mystery out of improvisation to build soloing confidence and skill. Recommended for students with at least minimum skill level on their instrument and the ability to read music.
Musical Theatre
There’s nothing like that excitement when the curtain goes up! Whether you’re interested just in learning musical theatre repertoire, or seeking the secrets of top performance in the “pit” from a proven pro, Dave’s expertise is your advantage. Dave’s Broadway Touring Show performance credits include Pippin, Altar Boyz, The Wiz, Showboat, Chicago, Ragtime, Shenandoah, Grease, The Sound of Music, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and more. Recommended for students with at least minimum skill level on their instrument and the ability to read music.

Dave’s Music Theory students are studying theory with someone who is both an accomplished educator and a critically acclaimed performer. So they gain an understanding of theory that extends beyond the academic and into practical, everyday use. Whether you are just beginning to understand chord building, learning sight-reading or preparing for post secondary school auditions, we customize our music theory courses to your needs. Highly recommended for students interested in songwriting.
