Jazz Club is a two-hour class, once per week on Saturdays.
Monthly Cost: $ 00.00 per month
Not just a place to play, a place to belong! Designed for students who know the basics of their instrument and wish to experience the fun of playing in band, this popular program nurtures team skills as students enjoy all aspects of a peer jazz band, from name/song selection to reading simple charts and lead sheets, learning harmonies and arrangement, soloing and “trading fours” and understanding the musical history of the songs/artists they have chosen to cover.
Students hone music skills while learning their latest favorites as well as the greatest songs in jazz, from Bebop through the latest in jazz-rock crossover music.
Classes build towards a real performance in a jazz concert, club or festival setting at the end of each quarter featuring our Jazz Club member groups.
Basic rhythm section instruments form each ensemble: guitar, bass, drums, optional keyboard, horns and vocals. Dave’s skill at creating combo and big band arrangements mean that no instrumentalist is left out and all experience the joy of performing ensemble jazz.
Each Jazz Club Band is as unique as its members!
Dave has coached bands to regional talent championships and the PNE Semi-Finals, and is in demand in the BC Public School System as a Rock and Jazz Band Coach. BC teen singer/songwriter Harrison Ivaz is a guest teen Rock Club coach, happy to jam or share songwriting ideas!
Dave and Julie Boton-Ivaz are dedicated concert goers who have attended some of music’s most historic tours by legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, John Abercrombie, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner, Larry Carlton, Al Di Meola, Nancy Wilson, Chick Corea, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Count Basie Orchestra, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Joe Pass, Dave Brubeck, George Duke, and many, many more.
Jazz Club with Dave Ivaz is learning with someone who has seen the artists students are performing live – and met, studied or performed with some of them!
Reading music is not necessary but helpful in each Jazz Club ensemble. Highly recommended for all instrumentalists who love jazz!
